Prof. Natalie Kübler

Titre : Traduire la variation terminologique à l’ère de la traduction automatique neuronale et de l’intelligence artificielle

Résumé : La variation terminologique revêt de nombreuses formes. Elle pose donc un certain nombre de difficultés aux traducteurs lorsqu'ils traduisent des textes hyper spécialisés. La traduction automatique neuronale (TAN) ajoute une difficulté supplémentaire dans la mesure où les équivalents terminologiques dans la langue cible ne se trouvent pas toujours dans les corpus d’entraînement. Par conséquent, dans les résultats de la traduction automatique neuronale, on trouve des termes incorrects, empruntés à un autre domaine ou inexistants. Le même type de problème se retrouve dans les traductions proposées par les Grands Modèles de Langue (LLMs) de l'IA générative ; des termes nouvellement inventés remplacent les termes existants, comme par exemple, le poétique « tremblement de lune » proposé par OpenAI pour « moonquake », alors que le terme français officiel est « séisme lunaire ». En outre, la TAN et l'IA générative sont toutes deux confrontées à des problèmes de cohérence terminologique dans des documents complets. Je tenterai d’illustrer quelques difficultés associées à toutes les formes de variation terminologique rencontrées dans l'utilisation de ces outils, ainsi que quelques solutions potentielles, du point de vue de la linguistique et en évoquant les projets menés à l’Université Paris Cité.

Biographie : Linguiste de corpus de la première heure, j’ai travaillé sur un corpus d’apprenants d’anglais L2 au début des années 1990, puis ai conçu un concordancier en ligne pour l’anglais spécialisé en 1998, et enfin, j’ai introduit l’utilisation de corpus et de la traduction automatique dans la formation en traduction spécialisée au début des années 2000. Mes recherches actuelles portent sur les corpus d’apprenants en traduction spécialisée et en post-édition, la traduction de la prosodie sémantique et l’évaluation de la traduction automatique neuronale dans les discours, en particulier en ce qui concerne la terminologie et la phraséologie spécialisée.

Title: Untapping the Potential of Terminological Data: Terminologies in the Data Space

Abstract: In early 2020, the European Commission published a communication entitled “A European strategy for data”. This Communication expresses the vision of the Commission on the benefits that data can have on both citizens and businesses, and outlines the European strategy for data. This strategy aims at creating a single market for data, also known as “data space”, to ensure Europe’s competitiveness and data sovereignty. In the same way as the economic single marked enabled the free flow of goods and citizens, data will be allowed to flow amongst providers and consumers in this new data space. However, for this to happen several mechanisms need to be in place to ensure data governance, security, trust and interoperability of data. As for the latter, specialized vocabularies will be crucial to describe data, discover data and foster data interchange. In this talk, I will give an overview on the several perspectives and uses that knowledge representation systems, particularly ontologies, have had along the years, and analyze the “pragmatic position” being adopted nowadays in light of the linked data paradigm. I will also argue on the convenience of considering terminologies as curated specialized vocabularies in multiple languages that can serve as “enablers of interoperability” in the context of this new paradigm of data spaces.

Biography: Dr. Elena Montiel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Linguistics to Science and Technology at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain). She is also a member of the Ontology Engineering Group, a renowned research group at the same institution. She holds a BA in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Alicante (Spain), a second BA in Technical Interpreting from Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences (Germany), and a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Her research interests lie at the intersection of translation, terminology and knowledge representation. She has participated in numerous international research projects and has coordinated the Lynx Innovation Action (2017-2021), funded by the European Commission, on Knowledge Graphs and NLP services for the legal domain. Currently, she is coordinating the Spanish national project INESData on Data Spaces. She is also involved in the TeresIA project, a project on linked terminologies and AI services to create, manage and validate terminologies. She has authored the monograph Multilingualism in Ontologies: Building Patterns and Representation Models and has published numerous articles in prestigious journals such as Language Resources and Evaluation, Journal of Web Semantics, Natural Language Engineering or Terminology.
